In Inglourious Basterds, an SS colonel visits a French farmer looking for Jews. The farmer immediately recognises the colonel as the 'Jew hunter', and acts as if Landa is well known among civilians. Were high ranking SS officers (like Landa) well known among the French (and German) civilians?
